Dear Reader,

This month, we turn our attention to the adventures of beach-nesting bird stewardship, where our dedicated team and volunteers protect the feathery inhabitants amidst the summer beach buzz. We also proudly recap the successful United Houma Nation Hurricane Supply Giveaway, highlighting the amazing efforts of our partner organizations and tribal members. Looking ahead, join us as we gear up for the Central Wetlands Reforestation Collective, an exciting project aimed at planting trees, grasses, and aquatic wonders. And if you are seeking a coastal conservation career, do not miss our job openings section for exciting opportunities with the Restore the Mississippi River Delta Campaign. Stay tuned and ride the wave of coastal conservation with us!

Project Highlight: Beach-Nesting Bird Stewardship

The beaches of Cameron Parish are populated with all terrain machinery and a lively crowd during the summer weekends. At the same time, beach-nesting birds utilize these bustling beaches. This results in some action-packed days for Audubon’s Coastal Stewardship team and their group of dedicated volunteers. Audubon Delta has been working on Holly Beach for years to protect beach-nesting birds during the busy weekends. Volunteers protect nesting areas by erecting rope boundaries and engaging with the public about the birds and their young, flightless chicks. This year has been a success so far, as the final fledging's leave their nesting sites. More info on Audubon’s Coastal Stewardship work, and how you can get involved is on the Audubon Delta website.

Hurricane Storm Supply Give Away Recap

On June 10th, Restore the Mississippi River Delta and the Coalition to Restore Coastal Louisiana co-sponsored the United Houma Nation Hurricane Supply Giveaway in partnership with Second Harvest Community Food Bank, Inter-tribal Council of Louisiana, Proctor & Gamble, and more. Volunteers from these organizations and tribal members came together to distribute supplies in this drive-through event that included frozen food items, crank radios, first aid kits, water, and sanitary products. The event was a huge success – with about 600 families, or 1400+ individuals, from the United Houma Nation receiving items to help prepare the community for the 2023 storm season. We’d like to thank the United Houma Nation for their strong leadership and the partner organizations and volunteers who made this event possible.

We’d like to thank the United Houma Nation for their strong leadership and the partner organizations and volunteers who made this event possible. We look forward to continuing to work with and support our coastal tribal communities for years to come!
