Dear John,

A few days ago, Rep. Jack Bergman appeared on Fox News to talk about the military.

Rep. Bergman has concerns about a drop in people willing to serve our United States military, all while supporting the blocking of hard-earned military promotions.

So from one military family to another, here’s a bit of advice to Rep. Bergman:

1. Withholding well-deserved promotions from military personnel doesn’t help recruitment — it deters it.

I was a military spouse for an active-duty infantry marine for 15 years, and I can tell you the excitement that comes with a hard earned promotion — a bigger paycheck and sometimes nicer housing! But who is going to want to sign up to defend our country when we can’t guarantee their representatives will have their back, regardless of the political climate?!?

2. Prioritizing culture wars over military readiness puts military families in limbo and hurts national security.

Our service-members and their families are doing good and hard work — it’s our job not to make it harder for them.

When you put politics over professionalism, all you’re doing is showing future officers that their careers hinge on the whims of politicians in Washington.

This is a direct threat to our national security. It’s unbelievable that we do not have a confirmed Commandant of the Marine Corps for the first time in 164 years. Stop hurting our military family.

3. There are real challenges that you can focus on solving to help service members, veterans, and their families.

If you spent half as much energy listening to the service members, veterans, and their families in your own district as you do appearing on television, you’d understand the challenges they face here at home — accessing benefits and affordable healthcare, finding housing, starting a new career, etc.

I’m running for office because out-of-touch politicians like Rep. Bergman have lost sight of how their politicking affects the rest of us.

Politics-as-usual isn’t getting us anywhere.

Change starts with getting Rep. Bergman out of Congress.

Let’s do this,

Callie
