Dear John,

I am writing to you from Melkadida Refugee Camp in Ethiopia, near the Somali border, to tell you about the conditions in the Eastern Horn of Africa, and the dire situation that we are seeing on a daily basis.

Refugees in Ethiopia are some of the hardest hit by hunger.Donate now: [link removed]
Displaced people here have lived through an unprecedented drought, with almost four years of no rainfall. This has impacted on people’s livelihoods, their capacity to produce food and to keep livestock alive. As a result, we’ve seen rampant food insecurity and shocking levels of malnutrition.

Then recently it rained. But it rained so much that we experienced flash floods. Most of what has been planted has been washed away, along with roads, paths and entire water supply systems.

Refugees are on the frontlines of climate change, increasing food insecurity and pushing people to the brink of famine.

The way that refugees and displaced people in this part of Ethiopia cope with extreme hardship is remarkable: their resilience and the way that they share resources should be an inspiration for the rest of the world. But humanitarian crises and conflicts don’t stop. And funding for this area of the world is drying up.

So, we at UNHCR are providing cash assistance to support resilient refugees and empower them to cope with food insecurity. With this cash they can finally purchase food at the market and feed their families. Today, you can make a difference:

With a regular $30 a month you can help refugees and displaced people across the Horn of Africa access lifesaving food year-round. ([link removed])

By giving $100 you can support a whole family with cash to cover their essential needs for 1 month.([link removed])

We are racing against time, and against nature, to help refugees and displaced people in Ethiopia. You can make a difference in their lives today, please make a donation([link removed]) on our website. Your support will help people in this region to feed their families with dignity.

Thank you, Johannes Zech
