They’ve always doubted me. 



People said I’d never win my first race for Congress.



The liberal news media said Republicans could never win back control of the House.



The Democrats said I would never be Speaker of the House.



And time and time again, we proved them wrong. <[link removed]>



Was it easy? Of course not. But fighting for a stronger and safer America isn’t easy. But it’s darn sure important.



Look - I’m the son of a firefighter. While most people run away from the fire, my dad literally ran toward it. He is responsible for instilling in me a fighting spirit and a refusal to quit.

My dad’s unwavering spirit and appetite for life is one of the dozens of lessons and values he gave my sister, brother and me over the years. It’s something I try to carry with me as I navigate the halls of Congress and the world of politics.



Like many firemen, my dad had two jobs. When he wasn’t working 24-hour shifts, he moved furniture. When he worked 24-hour shifts, my mom would pile my siblings and me into the car and drive us down to the fire station to visit him.



Dad had a particular saying that always stuck with me: “Any job big or small, do it right or not at all.”

That’s the challenge we now face as we try to turn our country around. It’s a BIG job, and it is so critically important that we do it RIGHT.



That’s why we outlined a Commitment to America. A plan for a strong economy, a safe nation, a future built on freedom, and a government that is accountable to the people. 



And when the votes were counted - despite what all the talking heads had said - Republicans won control of the House of Representatives. 



And when I was finally handed the gavel as Speaker of the House on that January evening after the mainstream media and political talking class said I could never win, I couldn’t help but think about dad and yet another one of his memorable quotes:



“It’s not how you start, it’s how you finish.”
