Hi John,
Let’s imagine a world where HIV stigma does not exist. Imagine the love, celebration and freedom every young person living with and/or impacted by HIV could experience. This is why we are recognizing #ZeroHIVStigmaDay today. This day was created as a global initiative to raise awareness around the negative impacts of HIV stigma on people's access to HIV testing, prevention, and treatment resources.
Here’s some ways you can contribute to a world that is free of HIV Stigma:
Debunk myths and misinformation about HIV by changing how you talk about it. That can bring us all closer to the world we imagine.
-
This CDC page has a great list of words to avoid, what to say instead, AND it explains why. It also has information and conversation starters on how to combat HIV Stigma.
- When people are afraid of HIV discrimination, they are less likely to be tested or treated. Avoiding language that judges people's sexual health choices is one way we can #StopHIVTogether
Have open and honest conversations about HIV within your community. Remember that people may have outdated information that is informing their opinion, and this could be an opportunity to gently correct misinformation.
- That can help you locate and share information on culturally competent and supportive places in your community where folks can get tested or get linked into HIV care.
Share social media that destigmatizes HIV.
