Currently in the US, 42 states don’t have laws prohibiting marriage under the age of 18 without exception, and 10 states still don’t have laws against FGM. In most states, child marriage is considered a valid defense to statutory rape. We’ve seen major progress on these issues around the world over the last 3 decades, but the US is still failing to honor its commitments.

The US is also one of the only democracies in the world not to have gender equality embedded in its constitution, despite the 100-year-long battle for the Equal Rights Amendment. We are also among the few UN Member States that have not signed and ratified the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women, alongside Iran, Sudan, and Somalia.

This sets a dismal example for the rest of the world and undermines the US’s leadership and efforts to advance human rights in other nations.
