John,
Over the last few months, we’ve sent emails being transparent about how our fundraising has been in decline for more than a year. And we keep sending these emails because the situation is dire.
Last week, we had to lay off nine of our twenty members of staff.
Justice Democrats is at a crossroads as an organization. What we raise in the coming weeks and months will set the trajectory of how we show up and what we can accomplish this cycle and beyond.
I want to be clear as Executive Director that I made the most responsible decision that honors our work, the staff, and stakeholders like you. Our work and the mission this organization set out with is so much bigger than any one person, and our decision-making is rooted in what is best for our strategy and mission.
I, and our entire team, don’t want to exist as an organization just to exist.
There are plenty of progressive groups doing great work. But we want to keep going because we believe our work is uniquely important in the progressive ecosystem with our laser focus on primaries and holding federal democratic leadership accountable when they don’t deliver.
Justice Democrats was started by just a handful of Bernie 2016 staffers and super volunteers. We had just worked on this inspiring campaign for president. Bernie put a progressive agenda front and center for millions of people for the first time — myself included.
Money has always been one of the biggest things holding us back from doing more. It’s the one thing that our establishment opponents have a seemingly endless supply of and that we’re always working hard to raise just a fraction of what they can raise.
Our work is only possible because of our grassroots supporters. I truly mean that.
Thank you so much for being a part of our movement to challenge the entire political establishment and elect more progressive changemakers.
Thank you.
In solidarity,
Alexandra Rojas
Executive Director
