You might recall that last month, the Supreme Court invalidated Alabama’s congressional map. They found that the district lines were deliberately drawn to minimize the voices of its Black residents, and ordered the state to redraw its districts and create a new majority-Black seat.

Alabama state legislators are now openly defying the court. They just submitted a new congressional map, but one that clearly falls short of adding an additional majority-Black district.

We hope that the judicial system will quickly strike this new map down. But it’s clear that Republicans feel empowered right now to test the limits of how far they can suppress minority voices through gerrymandering — in no small part because the courts have for years weakened the Voting Rights Act and removed the guardrails against unfair district lines.

It’s time for Congress to reassert its power. It needs to legislatively strengthen the Voting Rights Act and pass clear rules against racial gerrymandering.
