This past weekend was San Diego Pride, and each year, I am excited to celebrate the LGBTQ+ community and their progress as we continue to fight for the advancement of LGBTQ+ protections.
From the beginning of my career in public service, I have made a commitment to the LGBTQ+ community, and I’ve never wavered in that commitment. As San Diego City Council President, I worked to oppose Prop. 8 here in California and I delivered an amicus brief to the Supreme Court against the horribly bigoted Defense of Marriage Act.
During my time in Congress, I passed legislation that would outlaw LGBTQ+ discrimination in the federal workplace, and helped lead the charge for the Equality Act, a law that would provide explicit protections against discrimination based on an individual’s sexual orientation or gender identity.
But this fight is more urgent than ever. Just weeks ago, the Supreme Court issued a disastrous ruling allowing businesses to exempt themselves from civil rights laws and discriminate against LGBTQ Americans.
Not only is this decision a major blow to our fight for equality, but it also opens the door for further attacks on civil rights. We can’t stand by while extremists continue to use the courts to advance their deeply un-American and hateful agenda.
If you’re with me, add your name to stand for LGBTQ+ equality now →
We must continue to fight for every American’s right to love who they love, marry who they choose, and identify and express themselves authentically. That’s why today, I’m reaffirming my commitment to LGBTQ+ rights. We will not stop until every American has equal protection under the law.
Happy Pride, San Diego. Always celebrate responsibly, and remember to continue the fight for equality for all.
With gratitude,
Scott
