Bighorn sheep lottery applications close Aug. 4

Ready for a once-in-a-lifetime hunt? Nebraska residents still have the opportunity to enter a lottery for a 2023 bighorn sheep permit. The deadline to apply is Aug. 4.

The winner of the lottery permit will receive up to four days of free guide service from Game and Parks staff and up to four days and nights of meals and lodging at Fort Robinson State Park. Only Nebraska residents are eligible. The 2023 bighorn sheep season is Nov. 28 to Dec. 22.

New campground to open at Sherman Reservoir

Central Nebraska campers can enjoy the partial opening of the expanded West Ridge Campground at Sherman Reservoir State Recreation Area [ [link removed] ] starting July 17.

Some of the campsites at the new, 61-pad electrical campground will be available; others will open later this fall once enough grass has grown to prevent erosion.?All campsites will have a 50/30-amp connection and are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

It's time to start thinking ahead to fall hunting season. Have you taken a hunter education course yet? It's required for all Nebraska hunters age 12 through 29 who hunt any species with a firearm or air gun. Nebraska offers both online and traditional classroom courses. Sign up today!

Private, club-style and for-profit Nebraska rifle shooting ranges are encouraged to participate in hunter sight-in days this fall. Each year, Nebraska Game and Parks seeks ranges to open to the public for one or more days so hunters can safely sight in their rifles for the November firearm deer season.
