The struggle for equality: On July 21, 1923, women’s rights leader Alice Paul announced that she would be working on a new constitutional amendment to guarantee that, “Men and women shall have equal rights throughout the United States and every place subject to its jurisdiction.” It was introduced to Congress as the Equal Rights Amendment.
Yet, 100 years following Paul’s announcement, women still face inequality in the U.S. A later attempt at the Equal Rights Amendment, approved by Congress in 1972 and ratified by 38 states, would guarantee women equal protection under the Constitution. It has yet to become law.
