In June, we celebrated Juneteenth and Pride across the Commonwealth. Regardless of the month, we celebrate Black culture and stand together in solidarity with members of the LGBTQIA+ community and continue to be committed allies in this fight for equal rights. And we are determined to continue to fight to elect municipal and local officials, along with a Supreme Court Justice, who will proudly represent our LGBTQIA+ community.

The good news: On June 27, a Pennsylvania court rejected a lawsuit from GOP lawmakers seeking to strike down a 2019 law that established no-excuse mail-in voting. Every Pennsylvanian has the right to make their voice heard, and this confirmed the convenience for so many Pennsylvanians who can vote from the comfort of their home. Thankfully, in our key battleground state, mail-in voting remains protected.

The bad news: We were all heartbroken and disappointed by the U.S. Supreme Court’s Decision to strike down affirmative action. To the individuals who feel pain from this decision, our message is clear: We know Pennsylvania is at its best when we bring down barriers to ensure all of us can thrive, and we remain committed to doing our part to help make that happen. This also serves as a stark reminder of the importance of electing leaders who will prioritize appointing and confirming fair-minded federal judges and justices who share our vision and also value the impacted communities we center in our work.

Moving forward: As July wraps up, we’re preparing for back-to-school season, where we will be ramping up our voter registration efforts at colleges, universities, and even high schools ahead of the important General Election in November. Currently, our State Supreme Court has a Democratic majority, but looking ahead to 2025, three justices will be up for retention election, which means the upcoming judicial election in 2023 is CRITICAL!

The New Pennsylvania Project was founded to consistently engage Pennsylvanians year-round to expand the electorate centering Black, Indigenous, and other people of color, immigrant communities, and the youth. We are out on the ground from McKeesport to Harrisburg, Chester City to Easton, Bensalem to Philadelphia, registering community members to vote and mobilizing these first-time voters to the polls for November and beyond.
