Yet the UK Government is backtracking on fossil fuel pledges, the plan to protect against climate heat is “very weak” and Rishi Sunak is accused of being “simply uninterested” in the environment and the climate emergency.

61,000 Europeans died due to heat last summer. Humans have never lived on a planet this hot. “We are in uncharted territory and that is worrying news for the planet,” says Prof Christopher Hewitt, the World Meteorological Organisation’s Director of Climate Services.
