After the recent tragic deaths of Marina, Cappuccino, and Ripple, restoring the
Southern Resident killer whale population has not been easy for this endangered
species, which is at its lowest point since the 1970’s. In fact, 69% of orca pregnancies end in miscarriage.

That’s why it’s such miraculous news that not ONE but TWO baby orcas have just been confirmed, born into the very same pod as the beloved deceased
matriarch, Marina!

While the new calves are a sign of hope for this fragile species, these babies
won’t be named until after a year — due to the devastating mortality rate of newborns being as high as 50%.
