Dear John,
The Supreme Court is facing a crisis of legitimacy, yet its power to run roughshod, denying essential human rights that were established decades ago, remains undiminished.
Ethics scandal after ethics scandal has contributed to trust levels and job approval ratings for the Court hitting record lows.
What can we do to fix this? Well, I have a few ideas!

There are three major reforms that would go a long way to repairing the damage that has been done, and prevent even more devastating abuses by the Court.
First, we should establish a code of ethics. Frankly, folks, this one is a no-brainer! Every other federal judge, in every lower court, is bound by a Code of Ethics -- but not the justices of the Supreme Court.
We should also set term limits for the Court. The Constitution does not explicitly require lifetime appointments for Supreme Court Justices, though it has become the expectation. Justices are not elected by the people, and they should not be able to consolidate so much power based solely on how old they were when they were nominated.
Finally, we should expand the Supreme Court. Why nine Justices? The Constitution does not set this number, and Congress has changed the number of Justices on the court seven times. This wouldn’t pack the Court, it would UN-pack it.
These steps would help us move toward a Court we could live with, a Court that is more concerned with protecting the rights of citizens rather than dismantling them. It won’t be easy, but it’s necessary, and it’s the will of the American people.

For the Supreme Court to regain the people’s trust and fulfill its function in our free society, these reforms are essential.
Thank you for helping broaden awareness of these crucial issues.
