Extreme weather is the story of the summer

We're not about doom and gloom here at CCL. But there sure has been a
lot of gloomy, doomsday-feeling climate news lately, huh?

Extreme weather got people's attention in June, when the eastern U.S.
was blanketed in smoke from Canadian wildfires and the south was hit
with record-breaking extreme heat. As summer goes on, these conditions
are only intensifying. Extreme heat is now hitting North America, Europe
and Asia alike

. Canadian wildfire smoke affected the Midwest and is now headed into
many states again

. Flash flooding

is plaguing the Northeast.

In CCL, we often say, "Action is the antidote to despair." So in the
face of these bleak headlines, let's jump into action. Now is the time
to visit our action page and make sure your friends, family, neighbors,
and members of Congress are connecting the dots between this extreme
weather and urgently needed climate action.

on Wednesday, July 26, where you can write a letter for the upcoming
World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation. The event takes place on
Zoom and is led by CCL State and Local Media Coordinator Charlotte Ward,
who will give you tips on writing an effective letter and help you
prepare to submit it to your local newspaper.

Featured chapter: CCL Hattiesburg

The CCL chapter in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, "has a core group of
dedicated people who focus on grassroots outreach, speaking with
neighbors on the impacts of a changing world on their local community,"
says chapter leader Chris Werle.

One example of that outreach is a two-part seminar they held at the
local branch of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, entitled "Climate
Change: What's Happening, and What Can We Do About It." The chapter also
connects with their community through local media. "We have been
fortunate to get a valuable outlet for our message with a monthly column
in our local newspaper, the Pine Belt News," Chris says. "The audience
is very diverse socially and politically, and the column has given us
the chance to communicate with people that we may not otherwise have
reached."

As they build political will for climate action in their community, the
chapter makes sure their members of Congress hear about it. They have
been meeting consistently with members of Sen. Wicker's (R-MS) office on
Zoom. Keep it up, CCL Hattiesburg!

CCL has nearly 400 chapters across the country. Find your local chapter
