Save a Life Day started in Kanawha County, WV less than 5 years ago... thanks to SOAR, a grassroots harm reduction organization. (SOAR is also a WV Can't Wait Hometown Hero). Then, under SOAR's leadership, Save a Life Day expanded across the region, then across the state. This year, that same community group -- with zero full time staff -- is helming a Save a Life Day that stretches across all 13 Appalachian states. (And it's not just about one day. SOAR works year-round, and they create a wide range of tools, templates, and support for other groups to turn their one day events into 365-day efforts.)

This is what a people's government looks like. Not just electing no-corporate-cash, pro-labor, principled candidates to office. But also bravely doing the work that government fails to do.
