These 8 Countries Are Increasing Renewable Energy the Fastest 

Thanks to plummeting costs and supportive policies, about 12% of global electricity now comes from wind and solar power. But to avert the worst impacts of climate change, research shows that wind and solar together must account for 41% of global electricity generation by 2030. While this rapid scale-up of clean energy may seem daunting, eight countries are already doing it, increasing wind and solar’s share of electricity by at least 4% annually. Read more.

In Michigan, EVs Could Revitalize a Struggling Auto Industry 

The United Auto Workers (UAW) recently criticized U.S. President Joe Biden’s green energy policies, citing concerns about worker pay and job security as the country shifts from gasoline-powered to electric vehicles (EVs). WRI research shows that in Michigan — the U.S.’s leading auto manufacturer and one of the largest auto producers globally — they needn’t be concerned. If Michigan fully embraces EVs, it could create 56,000 additional auto manufacturing jobs by 2030 while boosting whole new industries, saving drivers money and improving air quality. Read more.

A New Economy for the Brazilian Amazon ​

The rate of deforestation in the Amazon dropped about 34% in the first six months of 2023 compared to the same period in 2022, according to the Brazilian government. This is good news for forests and, despite what many may think, the economy as well: New research from WRI Brasil finds that Brazil can grow its economy by at least $8.2 billion a year by 2050 while ending deforestation in the Amazon rainforest. In the shift to a low-carbon world, demand for the critical minerals — such as lithium, cobalt and graphite — that make up EV batteries, wind turbines, solar panels and other clean technologies is only going to increase.
