John, are you feeling the summer heat? More severe heat waves due to climate change are affecting the health and livelihoods of millions of people. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is predicting a hotter than average summer for much of the U.S. including my home state of Colorado.
As EDF's Senior Director of Regulatory and Legislative Affairs, these increasingly hot summers are an ever-present reminder of the importance of the work I do every day at EDF — especially slashing methane pollution.
While these new highs are scary, there is hope to fight climate change by slashing methane and carbon pollution right now. EDF studies show that:
# There is low-hanging fruit: One of the easiest ways to slash methane pollution is for the U.S. oil and gas industry to plug the estimated one million abandoned wells that are leaking methane. A new $4.7 billion federal program has begun funding this cleanup — a major environmental win that EDF helped pass.
# It’s doable and affordable: We have the technology needed to reduce oil and gas methane by 75%, and two-thirds of those reductions could be achieved at zero net cost to industry.
The moment for bold climate action is NOW. You can join the fight to reduce warming by donating to our $2-for-$1 Summer Match campaign. For every $1 you donate, two long-time EDF donors will give $2 more, tripling the impact you can make.

Acting now to reduce methane pollution will have immediate benefits to our climate. Your support fuels my work on the global energy transition team to reduce warming by:
# Urging the Biden Administration to advance stronger methane rules that will protect the health of millions of people. Oil and gas pollution is dangerous to our health — especially to those of us who live near oil and gas wells and in areas with aging oil and gas infrastructure.
# Working with companies and the U.S. oil and gas industry to plug methane leaks, one of the easiest and most affordable ways to slash methane pollution. Methane is the primary ingredient of natural gas, so when producers plug leaks, they’re putting more product in the pipeline.
# Deploying leak-detecting instruments and sensors on airplanes, drones — and even a satellite. EDF created MethaneSAT, a satellite launching early next year that will locate and quantify methane pollution, arming the public with high precision data we can use to hold companies and governments accountable.
John, tackling the issue of climate change can’t wait. We have solutions at hand, and members like you are the driving force we need to stabilize the climate. Seize this opportunity and donate to EDF’s Summer Match to triple your impact today:
