Last week, the IRS announced that thanks to an increased investment in audits of the wealthy and corporations, the agency had already collected $38 million in taxes owed by wealthy, delinquent tax dodgers.[1]
Estimates from the Inflation Reduction Act indicate that the $80 billion investment in the IRS will help raise more than $200 billion in revenue, mostly by increasing tax audits on the wealthy and corporations―ensuring they’re finally paying what they owe in taxes.[2]
But instead of celebrating millionaire and billionaire tax cheats paying their fair share, House Republicans are attempting to rescind $67 billion of the $80 billion investment in the IRS. They apparently want to allow the wealthy to continue dodging taxes.
Take action today by writing to your representative, demanding they reject the $67 billion cut to IRS funding that undercuts the IRS just as it’s finally cracking down on wealthy tax cheats.
We know that when the wealthy pay their fair share, we can invest in working people and lower costs on everything from healthcare to housing to food to education.

Last year, we helped secure an $80 billion investment in the IRS over 10 years to crack down on wealthy and corporate tax cheats and help the IRS better serve the American people. And, that investment is already paying off:[1]
 But, instead of celebrating wealthy tax cheats being held accountable, House Republicans want to allow their millionaire and billionaire donors to continue dodging taxes. In fact, Republicans are attempting to rescind $67 billion of the $80 billion invested in the IRS―far more than the cut negotiated between President Biden and Speaker McCarthy in the debt ceiling standoff.
With the House Appropriations Committee expected to vote this week and next on multiple spending packages that would gut IRS funding, we’re fighting back. Click here to write to your representative and demand they reject any cuts to IRS funding.
In addition to cracking down on wealthy tax cheats who dodge $160 billion in taxes they owe each year, the IRS is also creating a “Free File” system that would allow US taxpayers to easily file their taxes for free online.[2] But now, House Republicans have attached a rider to the must-pass spending bill that would eliminate “Free File”―creating a massive handout to the corporate tax prep industry, including H&R Block and TurboTax, which have been fighting “Free File” for decades.[3]
Together, we’ve secured historic investments in the IRS that help make the US tax system fairer for everyday people. Now we must defend those investments so the IRS can continue to crack down on wealthy tax cheats―raising revenue that can be used to invest in working people to lower costs on everything from healthcare to housing to food to education.
