John xxxxxx,
Upon entering the Capitol, there is a painting of General George Washington at the height of his military power, resigning his commission as the Commander in Chief of the Continental Army more than 235 years ago. This moment captures a timeless lesson that General Washington, who went on to be our first President, taught us. Here was a man who could have become King, and many tried to convince him to do just that. But he knew that if America’s great experiment in self-government was going to work, he needed to set an example. Washington feared that someday, someone like Donald Trump might come to power. The Framers of the Constitution feared the rise of a corrupt man bent on abusing the power of his office for personal gain. That moment is upon us. It is in this spirit that the House acted to defend our democracy and vindicate the principe that in America no one is above the law. President Trump temporarily escaped accountability. But his fate is now in the hands of the American people. That is precisely what General Washington would have wanted. This election will go a long way toward determining what sort of country we will become. Will we remain a democratic republic anchored in the rule of law? Or will America abandon our roots as a government of the people, by the people, and for the people? On Presidents' day, we pause to celebrate the great leaders of the past who have helped bring us this far. My commitment to you is to fight for an America that includes everyone, and end the national nightmare currently in the White House. Will you join me? Thank you, Hakeem
