We want to draw your
attention to two critical and recent news items. Tuesday,
we learned that the fascist leader, former US president, and leading 2024
Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has received a “target
letter” from the US Department of Justice in connection with the criminal
investigation into his efforts to retain power after he lost the 2020
presidential election.
This is a strong indication that he will
be indicted for his efforts to subvert and overturn Joe Biden’s victory. Trump
currently faces numerous investigations, at both the state and federal
levels. He has been indicted in two previous cases, at the federal level
for his handling of classified documents and at the state level in
Manhattan in connection with the alleged payment of hush money to
safeguard his path to the presidency in 2016. Georgia prosecutor Fani
Willis is reportedly concluding a criminal inquiry into Trump’s efforts
to reverse the 2020 election results in that state.
At the same time,
a recent New York Times report shows that the Trump campaign is
“planning a sweeping expansion of presidential power over the machinery
of government,” working up detailed plans to “re-shap[e] the structure
of the executive branch to concentrate far greater authority directly in
his hands” should Trump take back the White House in 2025.
All of this
and more raises a number of questions that deserve serious attention as
we struggle against the terrifying specter of fascist consolidation in
the world’s most powerful and dangerous government.
