John, This week, Free Speech For People and Generation Vote issued a joint letter to the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights urging it to revoke its appointment of Trump lawyer and election denier Cleta Mitchell to the US Election Assistance Commission’s Board of Advisors. In 2021, the Commission appointed Mitchell to this federal advisory board, which works with the EAC to provide guidance to states on election administration. But Mitchell testified under oath in 2022 before the January 6 House Select Committee that no one in the American public has a constitutional right to vote for President of the United States. In her view, citizens merely serve an “advisory role” while state legislatures are ultimately responsible for their electors. Mitchell was also part of the conspiracy, following the November 2020 election, to try to pressure the Georgia Secretary of State to “find” enough votes for Trump to (falsely) win the state. She continues to spread the Big Lie of election fraud in the 2020 presidential election and is advocating for policies across the country designed to limit voter access and turnout. Sign if you agree: Cleta Mitchell is unfit to serve on the EAC’s Board of Advisors. Since her appointment to the EAC Board, Ms. Mitchell has continued to promote false claims of election fraud and has undermined a legitimate, bipartisan program to secure elections. She has even gone so far as to outline a calculated strategy for limiting voting access for young voters, highlighting the need to curtail voting on college campuses and restrict same-day voter registration. This would directly disenfranchise young voters (Millennials and Gen Z) and erode any foundation of a just democracy for all. These activities, which operationalize her belief that Americans do not have a constitutional right to vote for president, further demonstrate her unsuitability for the position. The U.S. Commission on Civil Rights and the Election Assistance Commission are tasked with protecting every American voter's right to free and fair elections, a freedom already under widespread attack by state legislators nationwide. Mitchell’s actions are incompatible with these goals and prove she is unfit to uphold this critical mission. The Commission on Civil Rights must uphold its own mission and integrity. It must withdraw Cleta Mitchell’s appointment and replace her with a candidate who recognizes and respects every American’s constitutional right to vote. Sign the petition: Revoke Cleta Mitchell.
