Yesterday, Congresswoman Cori Bush led a roundtable discussion about what’s at stake as Republicans try to pass a nationwide abortion ban, including their attempts to restrict medication abortion.

As Cori explained, abortion is a racial justice, economic justice, and public health issue. She’s introduced legislation to protect access to medication abortion, which is a lifeline for already-marginalized people who can’t afford to take time off work or get childcare or arrange to travel hundreds of miles to an abortion clinic.

About 45% of U.S. Black women live in the 14 states that have banned abortion in the past year since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. And Republicans in Congress recently proposed a national abortion ban, trying to take us back to the time before Roe v. Wade when the leading cause of death for Black women was sepsis from unsafe abortions.

In yesterday’s round table discussion about medication abortion, Cori joined House Oversight Democrats and a leader with Abortion Action Missouri who has personally navigated the risk of criminalization for having an abortion.

Of course, the people who are already over-criminalized and under-served in our current legal system -- Black, brown, Indigenous, disabled, trans, and low-income folks -- are most at threat as state and federal lawmakers crack down on access to abortion care.

Cori has personally faced systemic racism and financial barriers when she needed an abortion, and that was while Roe v. Wade was still in place. The situation is more dire and urgent now.

But as Cori has said, people will still keep getting abortions. The Supreme Court and Republicans can’t stop that. What they can do is continue to limit access to safe and legal abortion care.

Their efforts to ban medication abortion and criminalize abortion will kill people, and that’s why Cori is doing everything in her power to protect and expand life-saving abortion access.
