Dear John ,
Action on clean water legislation is reaching a fever pitch in the waning days of the legislative session, but one bill stands out as a sneak attack on clean water.

There’s legislation being circulated right now at the State Capitol that, if passed, will allow corporate polluters and their enablers like the American Chemistry Council and Wisconsin Manufacturers and Commerce to interfere with longstanding procedures for protecting Wisconsin’s groundwater.
When it comes to polluters, you can never let your guard down. Tell your elected representatives to oppose the Polluting the Groundwater Process Bill (AB 794) now. [[link removed]]
For more than 35 years, the state’s process for setting groundwater standards has protected its citizens from toxins like mercury and chemicals like PCBs – more than 135 toxic substances, actually – infiltrating the groundwater, which hundreds of thousands of us depend on for drinking water.Currently, the Department of Natural Resources periodically compiles a list of pollutants like new pesti-cides on the market and industrial pollutants newly linked to health risks. These lists are sent to the Department of Health Services.
There, the DHS reviews scientific literature and makes science-based calculations for the levels of these potentially dangerous substances that will be allowed in our groundwater.
Now, lobbying groups like the American Chemistry Council and Wisconsin Manufacturers and Commerce are claiming polluters should have an all-access pass to this tried and true process for protecting Wisconsinites from groundwater pollution. They want to demolish the firewall between their personal interests and unbiased science by inserting themselves into the interplay between government agencies.

It’s a typical move – polluters using a deceptive pretense to scrape out a toe hold from which to chip away at oversight of their industries.
Every single person in the State Capitol who claims to be working in your best interest including representatives, senators, and all the way up to
the governor, can’t be fooled by these forces anymore. It’s too damaging, too dangerous, and too irresponsible to look the other way.
The Polluting the Process Bill must be defeated before it’s allowed to cause irreparable damage to Wisconsin’s groundwater. [[link removed]]
