It’s August Recess — Which is YOUR Chance to Meet with Your Members of Congress!

Right now, Congress is on August recess, when members head home to their districts for a six-week break. It’s the perfect opportunity for activists like you to meet with your members about their stances on gun reform. Depending on your member’s record, you can:

1) Thank them for being a gun safety champion.
2) Hold them accountable for opposing common-sense gun reform.

Make your voice heard! If this is your first time reaching out to your representative, we have you covered! Read our how-to blog on how you can organize during August recess.

You Helped Us Get LOUD to Demand Senate Action!

It’s been more than 20 years since Congress funded research into gun violence prevention. TWENTY YEARS! The House recently approved funding to study this epidemic, but the Senate has failed to act. On Thursday, we rolled up our sleeves and urged Senate Majority Leader hold a vote on this lifesaving funding. We’re demanding action from the Senate because there’s so much #WeNeedToKnow about our country’s gun violence epidemic if we want to identify and invest in solutions. We joined our friends at March For Our Lives in recording videos with senators on Capitol Hill, and we helped organize a coalitionTwitterstorm. With your help, we made #WeNeedToKnow trend on Twitter, and a number of presidential candidates joined the social media action. Help keep up the pressure by contacting your senators today! [

A Serial Killer Murdered Her Son. Brady’s Legal Team is in Court to Help Her Get Justice

This week, Brady’s Jon Lowy traveled to South Carolina to argue against a defendant gun dealer’s motion to dismiss in a case called Coxie v. Academy Sports and Outdoors. Brady’s lawsuit claims that the gun seller unlawfully sold firearms to a straw purchaser who illegally transferred the weapons to a serial killer. The serial killer then used the weapons to imprison and murder multiple people, including Johnny Coxie, who is the son of our client, Cindy Coxie. In response to defendant’s motion to dismiss, Brady argued that the case wasn’t barred by the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act (PLCAA) and that the case should move forward. We’ll continue to seek justice for the victims of gun violence. Read more about the case.

Brady’s Legal Team Fights for Gun Safety in California Courts

In a big win this week, a California court upheld the state’s assault weapon ban in Rupp v. Becerra. Brady filed an amicus brief in support of the state, which the Court cited in its opinion to note the devastating psychological, social, and economic effects caused by mass shootings. Also, this week, Brady Legal filed an amicus brief in the 9th Circuit arguing against efforts to overturn California’s restrictions on high-capacity magazines. Our brief in Duncan v. Becerra emphasized the risks associated with high-capacity magazines and highlighted the importance of the legislative process in enacting laws to protect public safety. Brady will continue to defend the laws enacted by state and local officials that protect citizens from deadly gun violence stemming from high-capacity magazines and assault weapons. Brady Quote of the Week

“Having as much transparent data as possible is one of the best ways to keep crime guns off of our streets… If we know which dealers are acting badly and putting guns in dangerous hands, we’ll be that much closer to keeping our communities safe.”

— Brady New Jersey President Carole Stiller
