Friend,
Polls show that strong majorities of Americans support a 2% wealth tax,
but corporate media pundits said it will never happen.
Broad majorities support Medicare for All as well, but the same pundits
say that's impossible too.
And when Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez proposed a 70 percent marginal tax
rate for the very wealthiest .01%, the corporate media practically fell
out of their chairs—even though voters support that idea by a 20-point
margin.
Why? Because the corporate executives and corporate advertisers who
control the media want it that way.
In totalitarian countries, the government uses state media to manipulate
public opinion and squash dissent. In America, corporations use those
same tools to convince voters that common sense, overwhelmingly popular
ideas are impossible—and to support politicians who put the interests of
the 1% ahead of the rest of us.
To save our democracy, we need an independent, nonprofit media that will
report the facts, not the spin of corporate elites. Common Dreams has no
corporate board of directors or wealthy advertisers. We have you, our
readers. But without your support, we will not be able to continue.
We must raise $70,000 for our Winter Fundraising Campaign. Will you make
a donation today to help power the nonprofit, independent journalism of
Common Dreams?
