Last year, public support for marriage equality reached a record high. For the first time, 71% of Americans – including a majority of Republicans – indicated their support for equal marriage rights. It was a sign that we were making important progress toward LGBTQ inclusion.

Republicans know that their extreme anti-LGBTQ, anti-choice agenda is unpopular with voters. But gerrymandering allows Republicans to ignore what voters want and pass their far-right agenda instead. That’s because by manipulating maps, GOP politicians can virtually guarantee that they’ll win a majority of power, even if they only earn a minority of votes.

Attorney General Eric Holder said, “Wherever Democrats can fairly compete, they can win . . . Unlike Republicans, Democrats don’t need to gerrymander to win.” That’s why the NDRC has been fighting to secure fair maps since 2017 – and our work is still going.
According to FiveThirtyEight, battles happening over redistricting right now “could be the difference between Republican and Democratic control of the House” in 2024. The GOP is desperate to protect their manipulated maps so they can implement even more of their extreme agenda – that means we must stay engaged.
