The working class in America has lost 25 percent of wealth since 1980. Is it any wonder that so many people are angry and disillusioned, that they feel as though life was better for past generations?

I’ve visited the Rust Belt numerous times over the years. Whether it was in Lordstown, Ohio, or Johnstown, Pennsylvania, I heard the same thing from workers: Plants shutting down. Thousands of jobs lost. Communities devastated. And our government sat by and let it happen.

American deindustrialization has been disastrous. Due to off-shoring, countless families have lost their livelihoods, their homes, their health insurance. Their hope has dwindled as the bills pile up. 

We made a huge mistake letting so much of our industry leave. But we can bounce back. We can move forward through a bold revitalization strategy, a new economic patriotism that will create good-paying union jobs and provide healthcare, education, and childcare for all Americans who feel forgotten and left behind.

American workers have been wronged for far too long. It’s time to change course and renew the American Dream for working-class families. It’s time for a moonshot investment in manufacturing jobs that will allow our small towns and rural communities to flourish once more.
