My biological mother was an addict, my dad was a criminal defense lawyer and civil rights lawyer. Many of my struggles and the struggles of my family are the product of this unjust system.
Combined, they taught me the importance of reforming our criminal justice system in a way that puts our people, and not some twisted sense of "justice", at the top of the priority list.
And that's exactly what I set out to do when I introduced the SAFE-T Act, a measure that replaced our cash bail system with a pretrial release one that considered a detainee's 1️⃣ alleged crime, 2️⃣ their risk of not appearing for court, and 3️⃣ any danger they might pose to others.
