Consultations Open: Protection and Inclusion of Gender Diverse Children and Youth in New Brunswick

Consultations Open: Protection and Inclusion of Gender Diverse Children and Youth in New Brunswick

Egale Canada is deeply concerned by the government of New Brunswick’s changes to Policy 713, which guarantees minimum standards for the protection and inclusion of 2SLGBTQI students in public schools. In May, we published a statement warning that transphobic narratives were being used as an excuse to roll back young gender diverse people’s rights at school.

The changes to Policy 713, which create additional barriers to social transition at school for gender diverse children and youth, have been condemned by educational and 2SLGBTQI organizations in New Brunswick and across Canada. In June, Egale signed an open letter to call for a reversal of the changes.

We are also providing input to the New Brunswick Child and Youth Advocate’s public consultation on how to best operationalize 2SLGBTQI inclusion in education. Members of the public, especially those from New Brunswick, are invited to provide written submissions here.

Queering Mental Health Supports in Canada: New Report

Egale Canada is pleased to share our newly released report: Queering Mental Health Supports in Canada. This research report provides insights on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on 2SLGBTQI people's mental health care needs, as well as the needs of mental health care providers — both 2SLGBTQI and allied providers who work with 2SLGBTQI people.

The report highlights ongoing barriers that 2SLGBTQI people face in accessing mental health supports, as 2SLGBTQI people report higher rates of mental health service utilization, higher levels of dissatisfaction with these services, and greater unmet mental health needs. Exclusion, discrimination, and a lack of culturally responsive and affirming care in these systems prevent 2SLGBTQI people from accessing the services they need to manage and improve their mental health and well-being.

Queering Mental Health Supports in Canada ultimately aims to bring awareness to the unique concerns and barriers 2SLGBTQI people face when trying to access mental health care, and how changes and improvements could be made in a post-pandemic Canada.

The 50 – 30 Challenge: What Works Toolkit

The 50 – 30 Challenge is an initiative between the Government of Canada, Canadian businesses, and diversity organizations. The goal of the program is to challenge Canadian organizations to increase the representation and inclusion of diverse groups within their workplaces while highlighting the benefits of giving all Canadians a seat at the table.

The What Works Toolkit is an online resource designed to support Canadian organizations looking to adopt or enhance their equity and diversity practices. Each tool offers concrete actions to help organizations set out policies and approaches for recruitment, mentoring, promoting, and retaining board members and employees. It also includes anti-racism, anti-harassment, and inclusive workplace strategies, and features Canadian organizations that have successfully integrated diversity and inclusion into their long-term vision.
