John, when I was a young girl, my parents were leaders in the Civil Rights Movement. They believed in an America that saw their daughter as more than just the color of her skin. They believed that one day, the legacy of racism would only be found in history books and never uttered out loud.
I couldn’t believe what I heard on the House floor last week. A colleague of mine on the other side of the aisle used “colored people” in a debate over the annual defense budget. When I heard my Republican colleague utter outdated slurs on the Floor of the United States Congress, I remembered the convictions of my parents who knew that we can be better than this.
John, this type of language has no place in the people’s House. Please sign my petition to say you’re with me in rebuking Rep. Crane’s comments.SIGN HERE
I was hurt to hear this racially charged language in Congress. It’s offensive and inappropriate anywhere, especially on the House floor while referring to our Black service members in the military.
As a Black woman serving in Congress (and the secretary of the Congressional Black Caucus), I was very troubled to hear a colleague of mine use “colored people” to refer to folks who look like me.
I’ll continue to show up every day and fight for my constituents of all races, but we must always strive towards a more perfect Union.
If you agree, help me shine the spotlight on these comments by signing my petition denouncing Rep. Crane for his actions last week. The more signatures we get, the more we can ramp up the pressure.
