Hi Global Citizen,
'A winner is a dreamer who never gives up' – Nelson Mandela
These wise words cross my mind often. I am passionate about farming but it isn’t an easy career choice. High costs of fertilisers, severe weather patterns and wondering whether I'm going to make any profit on produce are daily worries.
But I have a responsibility to my community and in tough times, great leaders like Nelson Mandela inspire me to keep going.
And I do. For the families who rely on me for nourishment. The women farmers who have minimum resources, restricted decision-making power, and limited time to make money in the market, yet show up every day, to work hard to make ends meet.
I dream of a world where these women are in leadership positions, are able to optimise their farming practices and improve their livelihoods.
Today is Nelson Mandela International Day, and every year on July 18th (his birthday), citizens around the world are encouraged to dedicate 67 minutes of their time to helping others – one minute for every year he spent fighting for justice, equality, and human rights for all.
From donating old clothes to volunteering time at a soup kitchen, there are endless ways we can give back to our communities.
Today I am spending some of my 67 minutes adding my voice to the "Hungry For Action" campaign which is demanding action towards ending hunger. And i am inviting you to join me. Take our Mandela Day Sprint and let’s continue the legacy of change.
