Congressional Support for the Juliana Youth! Last Thursday was a huge day for the 21 youth represented by Our Children’s Trust in our federal constitutional climate lawsuit Juliana v. United States as 14 U.S. Senators and 65 U.S. Representatives joined the reintroduction of concurrent resolutions in the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives to protect youth’s fundamental right to a safe climate.
The Children’s Fundamental Rights and Climate Recovery resolution (S.Con.Res.13andH.Con.Res.56)is sponsored by Senator Jeff Merkley (D-OR), Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky (IL-09), and Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal (WA-07) and co-sponsored by Senators Blumenthal, Booker, Duckworth, Durbin, Markey, Murray, Padilla, Sanders, Van Hollen, Warren, Welch, Whitehouse, and Wyden as well as Representatives Blumenauer, Castor, Chu, Frost, Grijalva, Jackson Lee, Khanna, McGovern, Nadler, Raskin, and others.
Aggressive Actions by the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) Meanwhile, as members of the United States Congress supported the Juliana youth, President Biden’s DOJ continued their aggressive campaign to try to impede this critical constitutional climate case.
Despite aJune 1st rulingfrom U.S. District Court Judge Ann Aiken that the case should proceed to trial, the DOJ has flooded the youth plaintiffs with motions to try to deny them access to the courtroom.
Time to Act - NOW! While the young plaintiffs await rulings from Judge Ann Aiken on the multitude of motions and briefs recently filed by the DOJ and attorneys for the youth, we remain in a critical window for action.
Contact Attorney General Garland todayand urge the DOJ to change its course. It isn’t too late for the Biden Administration DOJ to abandon their continuation of the Trump Administration DOJ’s legacy - one that repeatedly sought to close the courthouse doors on these young Americans - and end their opposition to this case proceeding to trial now!
