Two House Republican Committee chairs just sent a letter to Lina Khan (chair of the Federal Trade Commission) asking for records of "all communications" with me.
They also asked about the "Progressive Change...list of '400 recommended names for positions' in the Biden Administration."
After hearing that we are working with the White House on local events to promote pro-consumer "bold moves" this summer, House Republicans hilariously asked, "What are the “bold moves” referred to?"
I want to give you some context for these (strange) attacks that show how corporate lobbyists and MAGA forces are joining together against progressive Democrats.
We clearly are doing something right. Republicans know our work is effective and are coming at us. Can you help us fight back now -- and do more effective work all year -- by chipping in at least $3 today? (Make it monthly for maximum impact.)
So here's what's going on...
Several days ago, a corporate lobbyist working for Big Tech companies attacked me on Twitter -- using the same talking points that coincidentally wound up in this House Republican letter and a public hearing last week.
They weirdly imply that two public-facing pieces of activism by us are somehow a conspiracy: sending a list of credentialed progressives to the Biden Transition and working with Administration officials to fight hidden junk fees on bank accounts, cable bills, airline tickets, concert tickets, and more.
Perhaps they are so caught up in the Fox/Tucker alternative universe that they actually believe these things are a conspiracy. But more likely, they are trying to smear effective progressives -- including Lina Khan, who regularly challenges corporate power.
Ironically, they don't need to send letters to get this information. Our work is publicly reported:
POLITICO (6/9/23):
JUNKING JUNK FEES -- A top progressive group is gearing up for an August push to highlight President Joe Biden’s attempt to end “junk fees,” the extra charges often applied to travel, ticket, and banking transactions. The president highlighted the effort in his Wednesday “Bidenomics” speech and liberal groups want to take the message on the road.
“There’s all these hidden fees, and people hate them,” said Adam Green, co-founder of Progressive Change [which] is planning a series of August press conferences on the fees in coordination with House Democrats and the White House in congressional districts throughout the country. He added that “the net effect will be that this issue that is very popular, that most people haven’t heard our side is fighting for, will get reported on” in local media markets.
Such a secret conspiracy! Break out the congressional letters! But wait, there's more...
NEW YORK TIMES (11/13/20):
The Progressive Change Institute, a group aligned with Senator Elizabeth Warren, sent an extensive list on Friday to Joseph R. Biden Jr.’s transition team that included about 400 recommended names for positions in his administration beyond his cabinet, the latest instance of the left’s attempts to help shape the president-elect’s executive branch....it contains a diverse collection of potential hires, many of them not well-known outside of progressive circles, who could serve in the Office of Management and Budget, the Patent and Trademark Office, the Internal Revenue Service and other agencies.
[T]he list includes people who are not corporate lobbyists but instead have backgrounds in public service. “Our assumption is that the transition wants to appoint good people, and so we are making it easy for them to appoint good people by doing the heavy groundwork,” said Stephanie Taylor, the co-founder of the group.
Many people we recommended were appointed! Including Lina Khan.
It drives corporate lobbyists crazy to see anyone have influence besides themselves. That's why they are attacking effective progressives -- and using their House Republican pawns to do it.
Republicans know our work is effective and are coming at us. Can you help us fight back now -- and do more effective work all year -- by chipping in at least $3 today? (Make it monthly for maximum impact.)
Thanks for being a bold progressive.
