A Mom, a Calf, and You
Dear John,
A female Vaquita - one of the most endangered marine mammals on earth - surfaces in the waters of the Upper Gulf. Then, unexpectedly, her baby calf, pictured above, emerges. The calf appears just long enough for the voices and spirits of the Sea Shepherd crew to soar.
The calf’s mom was pushed to the edge of extinction by poachers. She refused to give in, and her new baby represents the future of their species.
This is why we fight illegal fishing. For a critically endangered species, every moment of protection is crucial. Seeing this new generation of Vaquita means there is hope, but the fight is far from over.
Sea Shepherd has boldly held the line during the deadly fishing seasons that threaten the Vaquita since 2015. Every year, we adapt and develop highly effective net deterrent measures using different ships and technologies, and in 2023, with your support, we deployed the Seahorse as a permanent sentinel in the Zero Tolerance Area.
Since 2015, our donors have stood with us, guarding the Vaquita population. That means this baby calf exists because of YOU.
