Three Gang Members Plead Guilty To Racketeering In Killing Of Off-Duty LAPD Officer
Three gang members pleaded guilty Thursday to federal racketeering for their roles in the robbery and fatal shooting of off-duty Los Angeles Police Department Officer Fernando Arroyos while he was looking for a new home to buy last year, according to the U.S. Department of Justice. Arroyos, 27, was with his girlfriend looking at homes to buy in the Florence-Firestone neighborhood in South Los Angeles when three members of the Florencia 13 gang, looking for people to hold up, saw Arroyos’ gold chain and decided to rob him on Jan. 10, 2022. Arroyos had just parked their car, and they were crossing the street toward a home when the deadly confrontation unfolded. As part of the plea, Jesse Contreras admitted he handed a loaded gun to Luis Alfredo de la Rosa Rios, who along with Ernesto Cisneros, got out of their truck and approached the off-duty officer, patted him down and took his chains and wallet, which contained Arroyos’ LAPD identification card. Rios then approached the officer’s girlfriend, patted her down and stole her property. Having already robbed the pair, Rios and Cisneros opened fire. Arroyos was struck by a single bullet, which killed him, according to the pleas agreed to by the three men.

23-Year-Old North Dakota Officer Killed After Suspect Started Shooting During Traffic Crash
A gunman opened fire on police and firefighters “for no known reason” as they responded to a traffic crash in North Dakota, killing one officer and wounding two others before another officer killed him, Fargo’s police chief said Saturday. Chief David Zibolski said officer Jake Wallin, a military veteran, was killed in the shooting Friday afternoon. Two other officers, Andrew Dotas and Tyler Hawes, were wounded. A fourth officer, Zach Robinson, shot and killed the suspect, Zibolski said. A 25-year-old woman was also injured, but authorities did not say who shot her. The gunman did not hit any firefighters, Zibolski said, but a fire truck was struck by gunfire. Zibolski identified the suspect as Mohamad Barakat, 37, of Fargo, but provided few details about him or the shooting, citing officials’ desire to protect the investigation. He said he was confident authorities would eventually determine the motive. “The first thing we always want to know in a situation like this is, ‘Why?’” he said. “Why would somebody do this? What happened?’” He said the state Bureau of Criminal Investigation and the FBI were investigating.

Watch: Florida Deputies Find Felon Hiding Under Boat In River
A manhunt deep in marshland along Florida’s Alafia River took an unexpected turn when deputies found their suspect hiding under a boat in the alligator-infested waters. The capture happened around 2:15 p.m. Friday, July 7, in a remote area three miles from the Williamson Park Boat Ramp, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office reports. The park is about 10 miles southeast of Tampa. Investigators say the 31-year-old suspect was wanted on criminal mischief and battery charges when he began trying to outrun deputies. And he was armed with a knife, officials said. “He took to the waters of the Alafia River to try to hide,” the sheriff’s office said. “Almost three miles into a shallow, narrow canal, he took cover ... hoping not to be found.” Aerial video recorded by the sheriff’s office Aviation Unit shows the small boat was discovered tucked under dense foliage along the bank. It was mysteriously empty when a Marine Unit arrived, but deputies eventually realized “the suspect was hiding under the boat.” Details of how long he tried to stay submerged were not released, but body cam video shows the suspect emerged and surrendered while standing in shoulder-deep water.

California’s COVID-19 Hospitalizations Are Near Historic Lows. Will The Lull Last?
COVID-19 hospitalizations are close to record lows in California, an optimistic sign as the state attempts to navigate its first surge-free summer of the coronavirus era. It’s difficult to say what the rest of the season will bring, however. The coming weeks will help determine whether some kind of uptick in coronavirus transmission is on tap, or if conditions will remain relatively calm until the autumn and winter. The rate of new weekly COVID-19 hospitalizations in California — though near an all-time low — has been flat over the most recent two weeks for which data are available. Nationally, weekly declines are starting to level off, too, with hospitalizations on the rise in some parts of the country. Throughout the pandemic, hospitalization numbers have proved a useful, if lagging, indicator of coronavirus spread. A significant or sustained jump in patient counts would probably mean the coronavirus is circulating more widely in a community. Dr. Peter Chin-Hong, a UC San Francisco infectious-disease expert, said he suspects that signs of an increase in coronavirus transmission are probably real in some locations, although “it’s not at a high level yet. And we don’t really know how high it will go.”
