Dear John,
Last month, the U.S. Army mobilized 1,200 troops to Peruvian territory to participate in military exercises with the Peruvian armed forces. This action, called Operation "Centinela Resuelto," involves the mobilization of U.S. special forces with military equipment and weapons of war.
The military exercises will take place in the south of Per?, where mostly indigenous people and peasants live, and where during the month of January of this year there were large protests against the breakdown of democracy in the country due to the dismissal of President Pedro Castillo, and the unconstitutional and illegitimate appointment by Peruvian Congress of Mrs. Dina Boluarte as president.
Word BEYOND War, with other international and local movements, has created a petition to collect signatures to be delivered to the U.S. House Foreign Affairs Committee and the House Appropriations Committee, demanding the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Peruvian territory.
If you haven't signed it yet, you can sign it here.
In addition, several events are being organized by the Peruvian movement in the United States and the solidarity movement to demand the restitution of democracy in the country, reject militarism, and demand that the will of the people be respected.
Simultaneously in Lima, large mobilizations are being called for July 19, with the participation of many social movements in the country, who advocate for the possibility of having a better future based on democracy and peace.
For this reason, we would like to invite you to join these actions that will take place in Washington, DC.
