Dear John,
Thank you for fighting for safety and justice in the District.
Your voice made a difference. Many community members reached out to express concerns about Ward 2 Council Member Brooke Pinto’s Prioritizing Public Safety Emergency Amendment Act. In response, important changes were made to the bill to remove provisions that would have dramatically expanded the pretrial detention of children.
But the fight for safety and sentencing justice continues. On Tuesday, the Council passed the revised version of the Prioritizing Public Safety Emergency Amendment Act, which still expands adult pretrial detention and is unlikely to deliver the safety Washingtonians deserve. This temporary bill will be in effect for 90 days after Mayor Muriel Bowser signs it.
The Council is also still considering Mayor Bowser’s harmful crime bill, which would expand mandatory minimums and weaken the District’s second chance law, among other troubling provisions.
Tell the Council that you care about second chances and safety. Urge them to reject Mayor Bowser’s regressive crime bill and to protect the Incarceration Reduction Amendment Act which gave me and many other people an opportunity to return to our community.

Second chances make the District safer and stronger.
