Ghita came to us in extreme pain. This 6-year-old donkey was suffering from a multitude of chronic lesions in her ears. For two years!

There's no doubt in my mind that mammals like Ghita feel pain just like we do. They experience fear and despair, too. So poor Ghita must have been thinking, “will I ever be rid of this horrible pain that tortures me, day in and day out?” We came up with a plan to relieve her pain, but it was complicated …

Our treatment plan was complicated because Ghita was pregnant. We didn’t dare begin her treatment … she’d need surgery, and anti-fungal drugs so powerful, they could kill her baby.

Ghita’s 3-year old son Khalid was also afflicted with lesions. So we sent Ghita home with her owner to foal, with instructions to bring her back as soon as possible. Then we began treatment on Khalid.

Mom Ghita came back to the Fondouk more than a month later — on the same day we discharged Khalid! The timing could not have been more perfect, and we were determined to stop the suffering of this noble animal for good.
