There Is No Way to "Cancel" Student Loan Debt

by Mitchell Nemeth

Despite the descriptions of many politicians and pundits, there is no way to "cancel" student loan debts. The debt burden would merely be shifted to people who didn't agree to take out these loans.

WE MUST CONFRONT THE REALITY THAT "CANCELLATION" OF STUDENT LOAN DEBT MAY SUCCESSFULLY SERVE A POLITICAL CAMPAIGN PROMISE, BUT IT FAILS AS SERIOUS POLICY.

Senator Presumes to Know How Many Days of Pain Relief 328 Million Americans Need

by Jeffrey A. Singer

Imposing a national 3-day limit would be an unfounded and callous government intrusion into the practice of medicine.

SEN. ROBERT PORTMAN IS PROPOSING LEGISLATION THAT WOULD IMPOSE A NATIONAL 3-DAY LIMIT ON OPIOID PRESCRIPTIONS FOLLOWING SURGERIES.

This Cartoon Shows How the Minimum Wage Works

by Mark J. Perry

At $15 an hour, many unskilled workers simply won’t be able to effectively compete against skilled workers and against automation, and we’ve therefore handicapped America’s most vulnerable workers by taking away from them the most effective strategy they have—the ability to offer to work for a competitive wage that is consistent with their lack of skills.

IF THE MINIMUM WAGE IS INCREASED FROM $7.25 OR $10 TO $15 AN HOUR, THAT WILL GIVE SKILLED WORKERS AN ADVANTAGE OVER UNSKILLED WORKERS.

Communism and Nazism Are Now Legally Synonymous in Ukraine

by Jon Miltimore

Before taking too much satisfaction in a nation equating communism and Nazism, however, the law in its entirety should be considered. As noted above, the legislation prohibits the use of Nazi and communist symbols. Violators of the law can be imprisoned.

THE RULING APPEARS TO PAVE THE WAY FOR THE REMOVAL OF MOST OF THE REMAINING COMMUNIST MONUMENTS AND LANDMARKS BEARING SOVIET NAMES. IT ALSO PROHIBITS THE USE OF NAZI AND COMMUNIST SYMBOLS.

Non-Profit Hospitals Are Making a Killing

by Richard Menger

The leading 82 non-profit hospitals in the US have combined net assets of $203 billion. Their average growth last year was 23.6 percent. These figures would make even the most loyal believers in the free market pause—except this isn’t capitalism.

THE TAX INCENTIVES FOR NON-PROFITS ARE WORKING OUT PRETTY WELL FOR NON-PROFIT HOSPITALS. BUT IS IT WORKING OUT FOR EVERYONE ELSE?

The "30 Days of Gas Station Food" Experiment Holds an Important Nutritional Lesson for Americans

by David Veksler, Jon Miltimore

Evidence suggests it is possible for the vast majority of Americans to eat healthily and affordably.

FRANK BEARD'S “30 DAYS OF GAS STATION FOOD” EXPERIMENT SHOWS THAT AMERICANS ENJOY A A BEVY OF NUTRITIOUS FOOD OPTIONS, EVEN IN THE PLACES WE LEAST EXPECT THEM.

How Our Culture Disempowers Teens

by Kerry McDonald

From rising compulsory schooling ages to rising minimum wages, we treat teens like toddlers and separate them from the genuine adult world they will soon join. Maybe we should give teenagers the freedom and opportunity to create their own scripts and witness the remarkable things they will do.

RATHER THAN CRITICIZING TEENAGERS AS LAZY AND IN NEED OF MORE CONTROL AND STRUCTURE, WE SHOULD RECOGNIZE THE WAYS OUR CULTURE INFANTILIZES ITS TEENS.

The Gender Pay Gap Says More about Preferences Than Sexism

by Paul Boyce

Ideologically, women and men should receive the same pay. Not all women do the same job nor do they work the same hours. The reality is that a large proportion of women prefer a better work-life balance. The choices that women make are, on the whole, very different from those of men. This means that outcomes are equally very different.

RESEARCH CONCLUDES THAT THE GENDER PAY GAP CAN BE ENTIRELY EXPLAINED BY THE DIFFERENT CHOICES OF MEN AND WOMEN.

Why You Never Hear Anyone Say "That Wasn't Real Capitalism"

by Kristian Niemietz

Western intellectuals have long had a habit of lauding socialist experiments as long as they were in their prime, only to disown them later, now claiming that they were never “really” socialist to begin with.

SOCIALISTS ARE NOVELTY-SEEKERS. THEY HAVE TO BE BECAUSE SOCIALIST EXPERIMENTS NEVER AGE WELL.

No, Millions of Americans Are Not Living on Less Than $2 a Day

by Joe Carter

New research published by the National Bureau of Economic Research finds that more than 90 percent of the 3.6 million non-homeless that had previously been classified as living in extreme poverty were misclassified.

EXTREME POVERTY IN AMERICA STILL EXISTS, OF COURSE. BUT IT INCLUDES FAR FEWER PEOPLE THAN WAS PREVIOUSLY BELIEVED.
