Dear John,
There were over 54,000 potholes needing repair last year and a
backlog of 1,000 kilometres of needed road repairs in Auckland
alone.
This is not just outrageous but dangerous and with National in
government it will be fixed.
Yesterday, Christopher Luxon and I announced a new
policy to address the state of our roads and highways.
How our policy will make our roads safer:
- A $500 million Pothole Repair Fund to urgently address the
shocking state of our local roads and state highways.
- New rules for pothole repair on State Highways, including halving
the standard response time for pothole repair from 48 to 24
hours.
- A requirement for NZTA to undertake renewal and rehabilitation
work on at least two per cent of the roading network each year, more
than double the current rate.
If Labour’s approach to transport spending continues, Kiwis can
expect more potholes to pepper our roading networks.
National will fix the economy and lift us from recession so
we can afford better public services like
transport.
We will bring fiscal discipline back to
transport spending by focusing on the transport basics.
The choice is clear, and the election is less than
three months away.
Thank you,
Simeon Brown National Party spokesperson for Transport
