Such unspeakable tragedies have surged in the Philippines’ Sierra Madre mountains as relentless loggers have hacked through its rich rainforests, tearing away centuries-old trees – and the protection they provide against the region’s raging typhoons.

The forests of the Sierra Madre are thought to be home to more threatened species than anywhere else on the planet. And they provide a vital buffer against extreme weather for millions of people. Locals call the mountain range their "mother" and "protector".

But now, a brutal grab for timber, nickel, and copper is decimating this vital ecosystem, stripping away trees that have stood on its slopes for hundreds of years. 90% of the ancient trees here are already gone.

Local heroes like Francisco, led by the Haribon Foundation, are working flat out to save these forests – and species that depend on them, like the magnificent Philippine eagle. Through the Forest for Life Movement, Haribon and its partners have already restored 22,000 hectares. But this is a mammoth task, and they need all the help they can get.
