Community in Conversation

Who: Hosted by the Thomas Jefferson Middle School PTA and Matt Royer
Thursday February 20th, 2020 7:00-8:30 PM at Thomas Jefferson Middle School 125 S Old Glebe Road, Arlington, VA 22204

Hate Speech: The Effects on All Students- Why We Need to Push Back and How.

Panelists: Alan Ronkin - America Jewish Committee, Dr Alfiee Breland-Noble (Dr. Alfiee) - The AAKOMA Project, Inc and Challenging Racism

With recent incidents in the Arlington community relating to antisemitism and racism coming to light, this panel of community leaders, activists, and parents, hope to tackle the hard topics of race, faith, and culture and how to better understand them. Parents, students, and community members are invited to learn how to talk about, deal with, and help resolve these incidents as they arise. We realize how important these issues are when our children are at such an impressionable age.

Challenging Racism will provide some practical ideas on how to talk with your children about hate speech. There will be time for Q&A with the panelists afterward, so you can ask those questions that may be specific to your situation. At the end of the program, we hope that you can walk away from this conversation with new insights and tools to engage with your family and your community to discuss these topics.

Admission is free.

The Arlington Democrats and the Arlington Young Democrats are co-hosting a Challenging Racism: Getting Started session on Saturday, February 29th from 11am-1:30pm at the Arlington Mill Community Center Room 404 (909 S Dinwiddie St, Arlington).

Registration is required to attend this event. To register for the Challenging Racism: Getting Started session, sign up here:

http://bit.ly/challengingracism2020

If registration is full, please add your name and email to the waitlist, and you will be contacted at the email address you provide if space is available.

Getting Started is a 2½ hour session led by trained facilitators to introduce participants to racial literacy, individual vs. systemic racism, impacts of redlining to understand segregation, and white wealth. The main topic of this session is the history of racism in housing. Using local Arlington maps and stories, attendees learn how the Federal Housing Administration's mid-20th century use of redlining to prevent loans to Black people affected a community by locking in segregated housing and influencing housing patterns. Attendees have opportunities for questions, discussion, and reflection. Resources for follow-up reading and discussion are provided.
Please contact [email protected] with any questions!
