Since I was sworn into Congress in 2013, I have regularly supported and helped pass the annual National Defense Authorization Act — a critical piece of legislation that we pass every year to strengthen America’s national security, honor the heroism of our servicemembers and helps deliver for a robust defense sector and all of those who work in here in North Texas.
As a member of the House Armed Services Committee, I worked with my colleagues on the Committee to create a bill that passed with large bipartisan support in the last month. Democrats on the Armed Services Committee, like me, fought to ensure that the MAGA wing on our Committee could not advance some of their most dangerous right-wing policies.
However, all of that changed over the last week. McCarthy, led by some of the most Reckless Radical Republicans of his GOP party, completely hijacked the NDAA. The bill on the floor yesterday attacked reproductive rights, targeted the rights of LGBTQ+ service members, and fought to eliminate the diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts in our military, and so much more. The Republicans' bill effectively forced their far-right fringe beliefs on our nation's military and servicemembers.
That is exactly why I voted against this package. It is an absolutely sad day for our nation when we had to vote against what used a widely bipartisan bill, because the MAGA wing now rules the entire Republican party. |
