When a country defaults, it faces an unjust system that is slow to resolve sovereign debt default—leaving the country and its people in economic limbo, often for years.

New research supported by Open Society has found that these delays in resolving sovereign debt crises are contributing to slower economic growth, reduced life expectancy, and worsening child mortality rates. And the longer it takes to come to an agreement, the more people suffer.

The global debt system is broken, and we need an ambitious vision from world leaders that helps countries escape the debt doom loop and prevents further suffering.
