John, if you ask Congresswoman Barbara Lee what the hardest vote she’s ever had to cast was, you’ll get the same answer every time: Her vote against the Authorization for Use of Military Force of 2001.

Just days after the devastating attacks on 9/11, Barbara Lee stood alone on the House floor against the 2001 AUMF – because she knew our nation shouldn’t rush into war while mourning.

Despite receiving death threats and hate mail, Barbara Lee did what she does best: stuck to her gut. The final count was 420 to 1, and the sole vote against the bill was cast by Congresswoman Barbara Lee.

From death to deficit, we now see the decades-long devastation caused by the 2001 AUMF that Barbara Lee foresaw. And, thanks to her unyielding dedication to protecting the American people, the rest of the Democratic Party – and even some Republicans – have joined her fight to repeal these harmful authorizations and end the forever wars they caused. This is her legacy.

John, Barbara Lee is the only candidate in this race that has led the fight against AUMF from the very beginning – and now she's ready to take that fight to the Senate.

My vote against the Authorization for Use of Military Force of 2001 remains the most difficult vote I’ve ever cast in Congress, John.

At the time, I knew the last thing our grieving nation needed after 9/11 was to rush into war without proper deliberation by the people. But when I first asserted this idea on the House floor, I was seen as a radical. I was slandered as unpatriotic. I even received countless death threats.

But that didn't stop me from fighting for what was right, though. The final vote that day came out to 420 to 1 – and yes, I was that sole vote.

My father – a retired Army lieutenant colonel – was the first person to call me after. He reminded me that we should never send our troops into harm's way without a clear plan, objective and exit strategy. And he was right.

John, I am the only candidate in this race who voted against giving the president the authority to wage endless war – both in Afghanistan in 2001 and again in 2002 in Iraq. So when the Senate voted to repeal authorizations for the use of military force against Iraq this spring, it marked a milestone in a mission that I've worked toward throughout my career in Congress.
