I introduced H.Res.517 – The Original Slavery Remembrance Day Resolution – in the U.S. House of Representatives for the first time in 2021. This resolution designates August 20 as Slavery Remembrance Day, because on August 20, 1619, the White Lion Ship arrived at Point Comfort near what today is known as Norfolk, Virginia, carrying what would become the first enslaved Africans brought to the English-speaking American colonies.
This resolution, if signed by the President, would establish a National Day of Remembrance to help ensure the evils of slavery are never forgotten and thus never repeated. Currently, there are National Days of Remembrance for 9/11, Pearl Harbor, and the Holocaust. These days of remembrance commemorate and honor the memory of the lives who were lost in these atrocities. Slavery Remembrance Day would do the same by commemorating and honoring the millions of enslaved Africans whose lives were sacrificed to make America great. You can learn more about Slavery Remembrance Day by attending my event and/or viewing the Original Slavery Remembrance Day Resolution along with other related material here.
Seating will be limited to the first one thousand (1,000) registered attendees. Registration is required for admittance but does not guarantee you a seat. Doors open at 7:45 am, please arrive early. Should you have questions or need additional information, please contact my office by phone at (713) 383-9234 or by emailing my Director of Special Projects, Robertine Jefferson, at [email protected]. Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely,
Al Green Member of Congress Scion of the Enslaved Africans –
Sacrificed to make America Great
