Keeping Foreign, Dark Money out of American Elections
Friend,
I'm working to keep foreign dark money out of American elections.
As you may know, foreign nationals are prohibited from contributing directly to candidates running for federal office. This is a good rule, I think we can all agree that American elections should be for Americans. Unfortunately, it has recently become clear that there is a major loophole to this federal law. The loophole allows foreign nationals to send funds to U.S. tax-exempt organizations (sometimes referred to as 501(c)4 groups), which then can pass those funds to political committees that support different candidates. This loophole allows foreign nationals to indirectly have a big impact on U.S. elections.
To me, it is clear that we must not allow foreign groups or individuals to sway our elections, so I am working to close this loophole. To that end, this week I introduced a bill in Congress to close the loophole and ban this practice. This is simply common sense, and I am hopeful that Congress will soon pass my bill.
To talk about my proposal, I joined CNBC this week. Click below to watch the interview.

Axios also published a piece highlighting my efforts. I'm focused on ensuring Americans have confidence in their elections. These types of loopholes deter confidence in our elections, and I'm working to stop this interference.
I want to hear your thoughts on this provision.
As always, if you would like to share an opinion with me or need assistance working with a federal agency, please don't hesitate to contact me.
On Wisconsin,
Bryan Steil Member of Congress
