Rep. Troy E. Nehls Questions FBI Director Wray Greetings! I wanted to take a moment to share with you a recap on what happened last week in Texas' 22nd District and the United States House of Representatives. This Week in Washington Rep. Troy E. Nehls Questions FBI Director Christopher Wray at House Judiciary Committee Hearing This week, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) director, Christopher Wray, testified before the House Judiciary Committee. Under the leadership of Director Wray, the FBI has investigated parents speaking out at school board meetings, targeted Catholics, raided the home of a former president, spied on a presidential campaign, censored free speech, and spent millions of taxpayer dollars in investigating the day of January 6, 2021. The FBI abused its Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) authorities over 278,000 times on January 6th suspects, crime victims, political donors, and more because they wanted to and had the means to do it. In 2016, the FBI delayed investigations into the Clinton family before the 2016 election because they wanted Hillary Clinton to be the 45th president of the United States. During the hearing, I questioned Director Wray about how many FBI agents have been removed from investigating child predators to investigate January 6th suspects. I also asked him how much money has been used to go on a political witch hunt to attack the greatest president of my lifetime, Donald J. Trump, to which he had no definite answer. One of the most pressing questions I asked Director Wray was about the FBI’s intentions with Ray Epps, who was present at the first break of barriers to the Capitol on January 6th. Many believe that Ray Epps, who has not been arrested for his actions on January 6th, is connected to the FBI in some capacity. One thing is certain—the FBI has been weaponized and politicized and, as a result, has lost the trust of the American people. They must get their house back in order. Nehls Speaks at the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Immigration about the Border Crisis This week, the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Immigration Integrity, Security, and Enforcement held a hearing to examine the consequences of criminal aliens in communities across the United States. President Joe Biden has created the worst border crisis of my lifetime. Despite what Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas says, the Biden Administration does not have operational control of our nation's borders. As a result, MS-13 gang members, terrorist suspects, and narcotics are spilling into our country at an unprecedented rate. During the hearing, I described my experience with criminal illegal aliens when I served as the Sheriff of Fort Bend County. These individuals wreaked havoc on the Congressional 22nd District of Texas, and my officers and I rightfully arrested these bad hombres. Instead of tackling the current rise in crime, Joe Biden is preventing Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) agents from enforcing our immigration laws and arresting these criminal aliens. He is inviting dangerous people into our communities, and I will do everything in my power to stop it. Joe Biden is not putting Americans first. He is putting them in danger. Watch my remarks from the hearing HERE. Rep. Troy E. Nehls and Former ICE Director Tom Homan Host a Screening of Death County and The River of Broken Dreams to Highlight the Border Crisis So grateful to have hosted a screening of Former Acting ICE Director Tom Homan’s new border documentary, Death County and The River of Broken Dreams, highlighting the border crisis in Texas. Under President Donald J. Trump, we had the most secure border of my lifetime. Illegal immigration was down 83%, and 465 miles of border wall was built. Under the so-called leadership of President Biden, that is no longer the reality. Thank you to those who came out to view the documentary, including Sarah Carter, who has been documenting and talking about the border crisis that is wreaking havoc on communities all across the nation. Like my friend Tom Homan says, “Defend the border. Save lives.” Rep. Troy E. Nehls Attends House Judiciary Subcommittee Hearing on FISA The House Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime and Federal Government Surveillance held a hearing to examine the concerning expansion of warrantless surveillance of Americans, the Federal Bureau of Investigation's (FBI) continued abuses of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA), and its failure to implement meaningful reforms. The FBI requires Congress to reauthorize Section 702 of FISA before it sunsets this year. However, the agency has used Section 702 to unlawfully spy on the communications of U.S. persons, despite the law requiring that this surveillance only be directed at non-U.S. persons reasonably believed to be outside of the United States. During the hearing, I discussed how the FBI abused its FISA authorities to surveil Trump campaign associate Carter Page. In Page’s case, the FBI cherry-picked facts to support its application, ignored exculpatory evidence, and even doctored evidence presented to a FISA Court judge to support its surveillance against Page. Ultimately, this American hero, Carter Page, was subjected to illegal surveillance for eleven months, and his life will never be the same. Therefore, I will not support the reauthorization of Section 702 of FISA until the FBI stops abusing its authority to go after Trump supporters and others with dissenting points of view. Service Academy Nominations Are Now Open My office is now accepting Service Academy Nominations. One of the privileges of serving in the United States House of Representatives is the opportunity to nominate outstanding young people from the 22nd Congressional District of Texas to be considered for appointment to our nation’s service academies. Admission to a service academy is a two-tiered process. First, the candidate must meet the minimum standards set by the individual academy. Second, the candidate must complete the congressional application by October 6, 2023, to be considered for an interview in our office with the nomination review board. Please note, the ultimate selection of appointees rests solely with academy officials and is based on their competitive evaluation of all nominees. The checklist and application can be found on my website. If you have any questions, please email
